DoveLewis Emergency and Specialty Animal Hospital is hiring a full-time Urgent Care Technician Assistant.

The Urgent Care Technician Assistant is responsible for assisting Urgent Care with the general flow of maintenance, cleanliness, and animal restraints. This position provides daily care for patients while providing support to the DVMs and Technicians. This role is likely to have additional responsibilities helping with exotics, and occasional shifts in the ER/ICU. A genuine love of and respect for all animals is required, as is an appreciation of the human-animal bond.

What you’ll do: 

  • Assist DVMs and technicians as needed, e.g., help restrain animals for x-rays, catheter placement, blood draw, etc.
  • Perform and assist with animal shavings and other procedural preparation as needed.
  • Maintain clean and sterile work environment (refer to cleaning checklist for details).
  • Wash, fold, and stock laundry.
  • Assist with patient discharge.
  • Retrieve recumbent animals using gurney (lifting 40 pounds or more with assistance).
  • Perform non-qualitative lab work (e.g., Procyte, Catalyst, SediVue, VetLyte, PCV/TS, slide preparation, Snap Tests, etc.).
  • Provide aftercare for deceased/euthanized animals, including completion of ID tag with pertinent information.
  • Take weight and TPR on animals as directed.
  • Report any concerns, problems, or staffing issues to manager or shift lead.
  • Share on-call responsibilities and assist with shift coverage as needed.
  • Manage the patient discharge process by communicating client/patient needs to DVMs, gather updates from technicians on treatments completed and charges entered, and provide client service representatives with updates on patients’ status; serve as point person the hospital team goes to with questions on where patients are in the discharge process; assist technicians with entering charges for outpatient and euthanasia cases.
  • In some cases, administer oral medications or subcutaneous fluids as directed.
  • Regular morgue time is required.
  • Required to pick up one shift monthly.
  • Prepare and maintain clean kennel environments.
  • Work in a fast-paced team environment promoting effective communication.
  • Perform other miscellaneous tasks or assigned projects during slow times.

What you need to know:

This role reports directly to the TAEA Manager and is considered an extension of the ECC department. Requests off, holiday and department closure scheduling are handled the same as ER or ICU. The TAEA Manager will reassign your hours or edit your schedule to provide you with appropriate hours in the event of Urgent Care department closure.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

  • Experience or education equivalent to a High School diploma.
  • Minimum of two-year experience working as kennel assistant, technician assistant or veterinary assistant.
  • Experience in a veterinary facility preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license for driving the DoveLewis transport van.
  • Any suitable combination of experience or education may substitute for the above
